Intranasal Medications in Hospice and Palliative care: Overview
Topic summary:
Breakthrough pain is a common problem in the hospice setting. Treatment for this used to be difficult and 5-6 years ago a major goal of this section of the website was bringing the concept of nasal opiates for hospice to the attention of clinicians. However, with the advent of multiple forms of highly concentrated nasal fentanyl it is now fairly easy for a hospice patient to rapidly and effectively treat their own breakthrough pain. The pages behind this section of the website review this topic extensively, but as of 2014 no further new literature (of which there are many studies per month) will be posted. It is now "gold standard treatment" for severe breakthrough pain and nasal fentanyl is well represented by the companies that have developed these medications.
